“Killing Eve” Taps Laura Neal as Head Writer for Season 4

Published

As per tradition, a new season of “Killing Eve” calls for a new lead writer. Laura Neal, whose credits include “Sex Education” and “Secret Diary of a Call Girl,” will carry the torch for Season 4 of the BBC America spy thriller, which was renewed for a fourth outing ahead of its Season 3 premiere. Deadline confirmed the news.

Created by “Fleabag’s” Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the award-winning spy thriller sees MI5 officer Eve Polastri (Sandra Oh) attempting to take down psychopathic assassin Villanelle (Jodie Comer). The pair share a mutual obsession for one another, leaving audiences — and themselves — wondering “will they or won’t they” hook up and/or kill each other.

Season 3 of “Killing Eve,” on which Suzanne Heathcote (“Fear the Walking Dead”) served as lead writer, will debut April 26. Season 4 of the critical and ratings hit will go into production later this year.

Waller-Bridge was lead writer in Season 1, and Emerald Fennell (“Drifters”) took over in Season 2. The latter’s feature directorial debut, Carey Mulligan-starrer “Promising Young Woman,” hits theaters April 17 and premiered at Sundance in January to raves. The thriller tells the story of a woman determined to exact vengeance on predatory men.

“’Killing Eve’ smashes television tropes in every way, both on the screen and behind it,” said Sarah Barnett, President, AMC Networks Entertainment Group and AMC Studios. “We have a remarkable squad of ferociously smart women writers passing the baton to each other on this show, aligned around a coherent vision but bringing it to life with their own specific sparkle and brilliance. Laura Neal is the latest incredible leader of the pack on ‘Killing Eve.’”

Exec producer Sally Woodward Gentle added, “Laura is frighteningly bright, takes no prisoners, and can laugh at anything. She’s wicked and wild, emotional and provocative. The stories we are already creating for season four promise a pitch-black riot.”

Oh has won a Golden Globe and SAG Award for “Killing Eve” and Comer’s taken home an Emmy and BAFTA TV Award.

Will There Be I Am Not Okay With This Season 2 on Netflix?

Published

on

Netflix’s newest coming-of-age tale is the sci-fi dramedy I Am Not Okay With This. Although the first season doesn’t start streaming until Feb. 26, we’re already curious if there will be a second season. So far, there’s no news, but the source material might have a clue for fans.

I Am Not Okay With This, which follows a teenage girl discovering her superpowers while navigating awkward high school life, is based on a graphic novel by Charles Forsman. Unlike some of the other comic and graphic novel adaptations recently, however, this novel is a standalone work, not part of a series. As such, it means that, in all likelihood, any seasons past the first season would have no source material to build off of and would have to venture into totally original territory. Outpacing or completing the original source material doesn’t necessarily have to result in a forced ending for an adaptation (hello, Game of Thrones!), but it does add an extra layer of complications. It also means that the creative team may have always planned for it to be just one season for one story, rather than planning for the long term.

In the end, of course, a huge part of the future of I Am Not Okay With This will rest on how well it does with viewers. Netflix’s famously secretive numbers and algorithms will have to justify the series coming back for another season, and the cast and creative team will have to be on board with it as well. Working in its favor: Netflix’s signature “creepy teen sci-fi” show, Stranger Things, is reportedly nearing its end, with the upcoming fourth season rumored to be its last. If I Am Not Okay With This can capture some of the Stranger Things audience, it might have a longer future as fans look for a new series to fill the void. Starring IT‘s Sophia Lillis and Wyatt Oleff, I Am Not Okay With This starts streaming on Netflix on Feb. 26!
