The Week We Spent Watching Tekashi 6ix9ine

Published

on

By

I was driving on Wednesday night, listening to Hot 97, when I heard the leaked Tekashi 6ix9ine court testimony recording for maybe the fifth time that day. Over three days in a Manhattan federal courtroom, the Brooklyn rapper turned his role as a government witness in a racketeering trial into a viral spectacle. With every revelation—he tried to out rappers Jim Jones and Cardi B for gang affiliations, and said he agreed to cooperate with the government a single day after he was arrested in November—he added a new chapter to a deepening tale.

When 6ix9ine first emerged, seemingly fully formed, he appeared to be a next-level mutation of a familiar archetype: the heel. Whatever one made of his rapping ability (usually not much), it came a distant second to his penchant for producing the kind of compelling viewing more associated with train wrecks. “I tell everyone I’m a troll,” 6ix9ine said at one point during the trial.

“Trolling can mean a lot of things,” he also said. “To me it means antagonizing, mocking.”

Whether he meant for it to or not, that schtick played in the courtroom too. If you follow rap internet at all, the saga was unavoidable. Same if you read Pitchfork or Cosmo or are just on Twitter. There were the courtroom renderings, instantly Picasso-like in their impact, if not their stylings. There was Jones, controversially described as a “retired rapper” in 6ix9ine’s testimony, despite having released an album in May. Atlantic Records denied Cardi’s affiliation. It was disorienting, unmissable, and weirdly cinematic for something you weren’t even seeing yourself, but assembling through secondhand or thirdhand accounts. It could scan as comedy if the source material—guns, heroin, kidnapping, domestic abuse, a felony for the “use of a child in a sexual performance”—weren’t the stuff of tragedy.

The parlor game of the day was imagining who 6ix9ine might implicate next, and the trial was moving fast enough, and at enough of a distance, that the possibilities seemed endless. I don’t know who else was listening to the radio on Wednesday night, but it felt like it could have been anyone, or everyone. We’re all supposed to be obsessed with “scammer season” already, but this is a different Trump-era species. (The latest with Caroline Calloway is that she has a new agent by the way.)

Not that it’s all entirely new. When 6ix9ine appeared on “The Breakfast Club” in March 2018, he boasted about how many views the interview would get. The video currently has about 18 million on YouTube. After a parsing of the courtroom audio on Wednesday, Hot 97 switched over to “Swervin,” an A Boogie wit da Hoodie song that 6ix9ine is featured on. It’s been easy to forget that not so long ago, 6ix9ine released some songs, even if they were always second to the persona. The Breakfast Club interview was more indelible, and the leaked audio should prove to be too.

Ryan Reynolds & Hugh Jackman’s Bromance Lives On With NYC Coffee Date – HollywoodLife

Published

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman took their hilarious social media ‘feud’ offline for an afternoon coffee date!

It’s all good in the X-Men universe — at least if you ask Wolverine‘s Hugh Jackman and Deadpool‘s Ryan Reynolds! The two actors were spotted taking their bromance to the streets for a coffee date at Laughing Man Coffee & Tea — which Hugh owns — in New York City’s trendy Tribeca neighborhood on Friday, September 20. Hugh, 50 and Ryan, 42, looked like they were enjoying the afternoon as they soaked up the 80 degree weather at a sunny outdoor table. They were seen laughing and smiling throughout the meeting, and happily snapped selfies and photos with fans who happened to be passing by.

The superfit Hugh got a workout in before his bro-date, as he rolled up to the shop with his bike and sporting a helmut (safety first!). The Australian actor greeted Ryan with a smile and a hug, as the two then made their way over to the shop and then a nearby park where they hung out for an hour. Their afternoon of fun continued as Hugh then walked over to Ryan’s New York City home that he shares with wife Blake Lively, 32, and their two young kids, James and Ines.

The actors have had a longstanding and rather hilarious “feud” on social media, where they exchange barbs back-and-forth — with Hugh even calling his Canadian buddy a “stage four clinger” on Best Friends Day! “The first time I’ve played #wolverine…and, actually bled. Clearly, it’s @vancityreynolds fault,” Hugh later posted — showing a photo of a cut — on his Instagram feed on August 10. Ryan hilariously responded, “I just don’t think you’ve been practicing enough.”

Ryan finally declared a long overdue truce between the duo back in January, tweeting, “Official truce with @realhughjackman! As a gesture of goodwill, I’m gonna make a beautiful ad for his company, Laughing Man Coffee. Can’t wait!,” along with a photo of the two shaking hands. They have, of course, shared the silver screen together in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

For the coffee date, the pair were twinning in blue as Ryan sported a button down shirt and jeans, while Hugh rocked a zip-up sweater with his denim bottoms. The always-stylish Ryan finished his look with his signature gray poorboy cap and fresh white sneakers.
